Furniture Care and Maintenance
General tips for preserving the appearance, stability, and everyday use of your furniture according to its materials and environment.
General advice: before any cleaning or maintenance, take into account the material, the finish, and the instructions available for the product concerned. An appropriate method helps limit premature surface alterations.
1. Daily Care
Regular and moderate maintenance helps preserve the appearance of the furniture and avoid the accumulation of dust or dirt.
• regularly remove dust with a gentle method suitable for the surface;
• avoid abrasive products when they are not suitable for the material;
• avoid excessive rubbing during cleaning;
• treat dirt quickly when appropriate.
The frequency of maintenance may vary depending on the use of the furniture, its location, and the characteristics of its surface.
2. Wood Furniture and Wood-Look Surfaces
Wood or wood-look surfaces must be maintained in a manner appropriate to their finish.
Dust: use a gentle method that does not scratch the surface.
Liquids: avoid leaving water or another liquid stagnant on the surface.
Heat: avoid direct contact with very hot objects as much as possible.
Chemicals: do not use aggressive cleaners not suitable for the finish.
Some surfaces may show natural variations in grain or shade that do not require special treatment when they are inherent to the material.
3. Metal and Metal Components
Legs, frames, fasteners, and other metal components must be kept clean and, when possible, protected from prolonged moisture.
• remove dust with a non-abrasive method;
• quickly wipe moisture present on the surface;
• avoid objects likely to scratch the finish;
• check the assemblies if unusual loosening is observed.
A matte, satin, or glossy metal surface may react differently to cleaning methods; therefore, maintenance should be adapted to the finish.
4. Fabrics, Sofas, and Upholstered Furniture
Upholstered furniture must be maintained taking into account the type of upholstery and the nature of the dirt.
Dust: regularly remove particles present on the surface.
Stains: act quickly without unnecessarily spreading the affected area.
Moisture: avoid excessively saturating the upholstery during cleaning.
Rubbing: avoid unsuitable brushes or abrasive products.
The direction of the fibers of certain textiles can temporarily influence their appearance after use or cleaning.
5. Preventing Stains and Surface Damage
Quick action can help limit marks left by a liquid, dirt, or accidental contact.
When appropriate for the material, remove the excess without rubbing aggressively, then clean the area using a method compatible with the surface.
Sharp, abrasive, or very hot objects can damage certain finishes and should be used with caution near the furniture.
Before using an unusual maintenance product, it is preferable to check its compatibility with the material concerned.
6. Light, Heat, and Environment
The environment can gradually influence the appearance and behavior of certain materials.
Sun: prolonged exposure can gradually change certain shades.
Heat: avoid excessive proximity to heat sources when the material is sensitive to it.
Moisture: avoid prolonged exposure when it is not suitable for the product.
Ventilation: keep the furniture in an environment appropriate for its use.
7. Assembly, Fasteners, and Stability
When the furniture requires assembly, correct assembly contributes to its stability and normal use.
Instructions: follow the steps provided with the product when available.
Fasteners: check that they are correctly positioned.
Stability: check the furniture before regular use.
Anomaly: do not force a piece that does not align correctly.
If a fastener becomes abnormally loose during use, a check may be necessary before continuing the use of the furniture.
8. Moving Furniture with Extreme Caution
When a piece of furniture must be moved, it is recommended to take into account its weight, its dimensions, and its structure.
Avoid dragging a heavy piece of furniture directly on the surface when it may damage the product or the floor.
Bulky furniture may require handling by several people to reduce the risks of impact, torsion, or falling.
Before moving, check that the movable or removable elements are correctly secured when they exist.
9. Garden Furniture and Outdoor Use
Furniture intended for the outdoors may be more exposed to dust, moisture, temperature variations, and light.
Resistance characteristics vary depending on the materials and the product concerned. Therefore, it is advisable to follow the information available on its sheet.
• avoid as much as possible the accumulation of water;
• regularly remove dirt;
• protect or store removable elements when appropriate;
• do not assume that a product is suitable for all weather conditions if this characteristic is not indicated.
10. Storage and Prolonged Non-Use
When a piece of furniture is not used for a prolonged period, its storage environment must be adapted to its materials.
Before storage, it is recommended to clean the furniture and ensure that it is sufficiently dry.
Removable textile elements may require storage in a clean, dry, and appropriate place.
Avoid placing loads not intended on the furniture for a long period when it may cause deformation.
11. Normal Wear and Product Anomaly
The regular use of a piece of furniture can lead to a gradual evolution of its appearance, especially on frequently used areas.
May be part of normal use: gradual evolution of certain textures, small marks related to rubbing, or slight modification of appearance over time.
To be examined: breakage, major crack, missing piece, structural defect, damage present upon receipt, or other anomaly affecting the normal use of the furniture.
The maintenance advice on this page does not limit the rights applicable when a product is actually defective, damaged, or non-compliant.
